What I’m Doing This Summer

Happy Thursday! I may or may not have been too caught up in the excitement of graduation and the semester’s end to have forgotten to write this week, so rather than a formal post, I’ve put together an overview of some exciting things I’ll be up to this summer. This post is to serve as some accountability for me to follow through with these things and as a way for you to know what to expect over these next few months.

1. I’m starting a podcast

This summer, I’ll be starting a podcast about health and wellness for musicians and activism—basically this blog but spoken instead! My co-host will be Navilla Burns, a fellow euphonium player who also has a passion for fitness. It will be released bi-weekly, alternating with blog posts. Stay tuned for more updates.

2. I’m recording the Revolution EP

If you’ve been following me since last summer, you should know about my Revolution EP. For those of you who haven't, I ran a Kickstarter back in September 2020 to fund this project—an EP comprised of three works for tuba that I have commissioned from three Black composers. The project had been stalled for a while because of the pandemic, but with things clearing up now, I plan to move forward with recording this summer. I will be releasing a demo with electronic accompaniments this summer (I’m still waiting on a tape) and will release the official EP this fall.

3. I’m training for a duathlon

I originally planned to do a triathlon, but after realizing I haven’t been training for swimming (and realizing how dangerous that could be untrained), I decided to sign up for a duathlon in June. A duathlon is only running and biking. The one I’m registered for consists of a 2-mile run, a 10-mile bike ride, and another 2-mile run.

4. I’m going to resume long-form writing

It’s been a while since I have sat down to work on a book. Back in high school, I wrote several novels (that may never be published). Getting my two degrees slowed me down, and I haven’t finished anything I’ve started in the last 6 years. So, this summer, I’ve decided to commit to completing a book with the intention of getting it published. I’m not yet sure if it will be a novel, self-help book, or a memoir, but I’ll post updates as it comes together.

5. I’m moving to Baltimore

Last but not least, I will be moving to Baltimore, MD to start my DMA in performance at the Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute this fall!

Thank you for reading! Next week, I’ll be back with a normal blog post on self-love and self-discovery. Subscribe or follow me on social media to see updates. If you have any topics you want to have me cover in a blog post or podcast episode, please let me know—I’m always looking for suggestions.
